“Between Israel and the Caribbean Seaboard: The Worldwide Web of Jewish Moroccan Immigrants”, a talk by Aviad Moreno

FreeThis talk examines the process of Jewish emigration from Spanish-dominated northern Morocco, and points to the trans-regional, interpersonal, communal and institutional networks that jointly shaped the character and pace of that exodus to Israel and Latin America, beginning in the 19th century. Moreno is a faculty member at the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, and current fellow at the Herbert D. Katz Center for Advanced Judaic Studies, University of Pennsylvania. His dissertation, Ethnicity in Motion: Social Networks in the Emigration of Jews from Northern Morocco to Venezuela and Israel, 1860–2010, earned the 2016 Ben Halpern Prize for best dissertation in Israel Studies by the Association for Israel Studies. His book Europe from Morocco: The Minutes of the Leadership of Tangier’s Jewish Community, 1860–1864 was published in 2015 by the Ben Zvi Institute.
