Courses Offered in Linguistics

Introduction to Semitic Language & Literature (Hatav)

Beginning with a brief history of the Semitic languages, mainly Arabic and Hebrew, we address their importance in their modern respective cultures in terms of political, religious, cultural, and social aspects. However, the main thrust of the course is linguistic.

Modern Hebrew Structure (Hatav)

This course deals with Modern Israeli Hebrew. It is mainly descriptive, dealing with the phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics of Hebrew. Pragmatic issues re the social facets of the language are touched on but not systematically discussed. Although the course is mainly descriptive, it is meant to form a basis for a more theoretical investigation. Therefore some theoretical discussion is included during class sessions.
